Happy year of the dragon! I think the actual new year was last week, but this was from the street festival yesterday.

fringe world (3)

These were from the Treasure Chest, a great re-use of the old Treasury Buildings which have been empty for years. There were palm trees and mermaids, and a band called Axe Girl that I thought were tops, and then, what we were waiting for, Bob Log III. He is a one man band of sorts. Impossible to describe. Like the area outside the Spiegletent in the Orchard, the Treasure Chest is open most nights of the festival, and free, so it's worth wandering down for a look. Details on the Fringe World website here.

In the Urban Orchard as the sun went down. I had a waygu burger. It was gooood.

fringe world (1)

Hello. Well, it's here again - Fringe World! Here's some highlights from yesterday, split over a few posts. Loads of photos of fairy lights, of course. I do like them. And I'm still on the look out for a caravan (like the ones in the top photo). I saw some on gumtree for $5000. That seems fair, but I think I can do better than that if I hunt around and keep asking.

australia day 2012

Small moments can make the best memories. Things about Australia Day I'll remember are:
Walking to my friend's house for drinks in the afternoon, in a heatwave, thinking "I'm pretty sure this is what it must feel like to walk on the SUN".
A thunderstorm breaking, seemingly from nowhere. People standing in the rain just to cool off.
A few hours later running home in between the showers, but with lightning still crackling overhead.
Reaching the top of a hill and realizing I can see the fireworks. Feeling excited and nostalgic by the sight of them, fumbling in my bag to get my camera out, trying to change the settings in the dark. Thinking the photo didn't look like much and not trying much harder, putting my camera away so it didn't get wet.
Saying hello to a group of people standing on the footpath. Them offering me a towel to keep dry. Watching the last 2 minutes of the skyshow together, oohing and ahhing, feeling sorry for all the people trapped on the foreshore with a several hour journey of traffic chaos til they got home, and us watching it from our doorstep. Tears forming in my eyes.
Everyone saying "let's do this again next year, and remember to bring radios!".
Getting home thinking, ah, Perth is a nice place to live (aside from the heatwave bit). Downloading the photo and deciding I really like it, even though it's noisy and a bit blurry. Feeling nostalgic for fireworks, neighbours, and other things that are good.

red & grey

Out of nowhere, the sky turned dark, and then it rained. Australia Day. The good news is the change of weather cancelled the heatwave we were in for. Phew! More about Australia Day in the next post.

Rest In Peace James.

To pinch a quote from Marieke Hardy's new book and paraphrase it, cancer didn't just pick you - by association it picked all of us. We're all in it together. We're sharing the pain between us. Rest assured we will all take care of Linda and Camilla.

With love,

H.

grey & green

Some seriously grey skies yesterday, but no rain eventuated. The Speigeltent is built, and the lights are up for Fringe World. Even if you don't feel like seeing a show, you should wander down one evening and just have a look, it's very pretty.

rainbow chard

Check out this rainbow chard (it's kind of like spinach). It was grown especially for The Colour H by The Perpendicular Pumpkin, for it's colourful, photograph-able properties, but has also been very enjoyable to eat and cook with. Just picking it and seeing those great colours is fun.
