This was Sunday morning. Coffee on Beaufort Street. It was really good coffee. And those brownies are making me drool.

Colourful crates outside the petrol station. Perth is in the middle of a heatwave (so much for my daydreams of winter the other day). Its not like a scorching 45 degree day type heatwave, more of a slow burning 35 degree day heatwave - that's been going for a MONTH. Over night temps are like 22, 23 degrees. Its vile. Claustrophobic even. There's just no relief, no breeze at night. Tempers are fraying, mine included. Patience is wearing thin. Interest in any activities other than not being hot is short lived. Oh well, this too shall pass. Its only weather.... Autumn starts tomorrow. Fingers crossed, some weather vaguely resembling autumn shall accompany it soon...

The lovely folk at Scraps store on William Street, have a new blog (have a look here) and they also have these shirts made just for them from the label Brooklyn Tailors. I took these photos for them last weekend. Drop by and say hi... they have clothes and prints and all sorts of things...

Anyone else a bit over summer now? Jealous of other cities that are having rain? Longing for tracksuits, ugg boots, umbrellas, coats, and a nice hot chocolate? I am ready for that. Ready to retreat out of the harsh light, into the cozy warmth of winter. I am ready for stockings and boots, and long sleeves. And scarves! My favourite winter thing is definitely scarves (why does it look so weird spelled like that though... scarfs?). I suspect I am going to have to wait a bit longer, as the forecast is not letting up for a while... but I see the shadows getting longer, and feel the days getting shorter, so I know it is on its way.

purple & orange

I don't know why but purple has never ranked amongst my favourite colours. It has always made me kind of uncomfortable. I feel like its a fake colour, not a real colour, a creepy colour. Weird. No other colour makes me feel that way. Most other colours make me happy. Even a really good off-white can evoke a nice emotion. Purple - nothing. I did have a purple cardigan once that I really liked. It came from Sussans and I got it when I was about 13. I really liked it. But that is my only strong fond memory of anything purple. Oh, I did go through a stage of being into crystals (also when I was a teenager) and I really liked amethyst, so I guess that counts too.

Top photo is the old wall at Ezra Pound, its been painted over now. Bottom photo is a wall I came across in Bayswater. I like the combination of all the colours together in these two walls.

The Bird. The staff are so nice here. They like you! They like that you are in their bar and would like to have a drink! They will happily get it for you! Its a rare find. Cute decor and a nice feel. A little gem.

Random yellow and blue sticker things, seen in William Street.

Hello. Here's a few sneakers from the Sneaker Swapmeet on Sat. I don't know anything about sneakers! This was apparent when all the people with their stalls were telling me which ones I should be taking pictures of, i.e. not the most colourful ones but these special ones, imported from somewhere, designed by someone... It was all in the tiny courtyard of a shop. A good way to buy and sell sneakers I guess!

Apologies for my harsh tone in the last few posts. Its been a miserable week, and I think that kind of came across. After a silly amount of time typing and deleting and typing and deleting, I decided it was all too hard and went with the basics, and decided it was all irrelevant because no-one ever reads this etc etc..... But then I think in the end I kind of sounded rude. I'd been carrying around a load of angry rants in my head, varying from the small and insignificant (like why do people park in clearways?) to the moderately important (what is wrong with the world that all the pictures in magazines photoshopped to such a degree that all the people look like they are made of plastic?) to the enormous (like what is the point of life, when the people you love can die, and your entire life plan can be wiped out in the space of several days?). Hence the type-delete dilemma. Rant... no shut up...rant... no shut up.

I've actually been having a self imposed culture-media-blog detox for a few days, which I think has contributed to me feeling a lot better today. No blog reading, aside from a few favourites - people I know or just favourites. Good blogs. Uplifting blogs. Have you seen Sarah Wilson's blog? That's a nice one (go here).

I've not watched the news or gone on any news websites, because I tell you that whole flood, cyclone, fire thing was really getting to me. Not just the sadness of what has happened and is still happening, but the ridiculous, nauseating way it has been reported. I think what was making me sick of it all was this idea that cyclones have "fury" or fires have "wrath", the rage of mother nature type thing. Its just the weather. It doesn't have feelings. It can't bloody well have fury or anger. And another pet peeve, the comments about people coming home to "a lifetime of memories destroyed" - well unless you suffered a brain injury its not actually your memories that have been destroyed, its your possessions. I just find the need to over dramatize the news sickening. Its freaking awful what is happening to all those people, why does it need to be made into an over-emotional soap opera?

Anyway, my media detox has helped me get a bit of perspective back today. I was getting annoyed at the shallowness of everything. And the repetition and unoriginality, you know like when you see the same photo on three different blogs. I thought cutting it all out would be hard because I really like other people's pictures and things, but I haven't missed it at all.

And now I feel heaps better for having this big rant. Thanks for listening!

Jus Burger on William Street. Good food. Nice staff. Cute decor. Dorky painting of Heath Ledger on the wall.

Am renaming Northbridge "Heath Ledgerville", Ledgerville for short. Not to be confused with Leederville, obviously. The mood in Ledgerville on the night I took these recent photos, last Friday, was feral. Bucks nights and teenage ravers. The Fringe World bar was a little oasis of calm and civility, and I wish it would stay.

Girl in a cage at Fringe World. I don't have photoshop, so I can't get rid of that flare on her hand. But I think it is still a foxy photo. Thank you for posing, girl in a cage.

State Theatre at night. Would probably look better if someone remembered to turn all the lights on, not just some (see third photo, left hand side - half the building was in the dark). Dramatic effect perhaps.

Scenes from Fringe World.

Words are hard to come by at the moment. I don't have a lot to say. The news for my friend and her hubby, who I mentioned in the last post, has gone from bad to worse, to worst. But there's nothing I can say to make sense of it, or even remotely put it in perspective. So I'll just focus on the pictures.

hope

So, my friend Linda and her hubby James got some bad news last Friday. Yeh, you know the sort of news. The sort that seems un-real, or surreal, but is as real as it gets. I just wanted to wish them the best. You can only hope for the best. There's nothing else I can say. Follow their journey on their new tumblr here.

I was totally lucky to get into see the first show at the Speigeltent on Friday night. Well not so much lucky, as patient, having got into the queue pretty early on. Like an hour beforehand. But it was worth it to hear the musical stylings of the captivating and effervescent Barry Morgan, who is here on tour from Barry Morgan's World of Organs in Adelaide. It was a journey of highs and lows, as told by Barry on the Hammond Aurora Classic. Make no mistake shoppers, Barry knows his organs. Check out the fringeworld program here, and some more pics on flickr here.

This is the last from the interior of the new State Theatre Centre that I took last week. My comments that it did not appear to be constructed with quite the degree of finesse you would expect for $9.1m provoked some interesting discussion amongst people I know, the general consensus being that things are just not built to last these days - furniture, clothes, appliances, buildings. It seems to be the way of the world now. Short term impact and affordability, over considered execution and durability. This building definitely has impact. My brain was actually quite overloaded will all the awesome things to look at, but I think I just felt a bit disappointed by it because I had stood up for it when others dissed it. I wanted it to be totally perfect, and the fact I was a bit let down by its imperfections revealed more about me than it probably. Perfectionist? Err... maybe. Anyway, time will tell how well it was built, so we'll just have to wait and see!
